The lab has analytical capabilities for both routine and state-of-the-art bigoeochemical analyses. If you want to use any equipment in the lab, contact Richard to arrange use. In addition to the instrumentation listed below, lab members also have the opportunity to use the instrumentation in the UB Stable Isotope Biogeochemistry Lab (GC-IRMS, EA-IRMS, H2O Isotope CRDS), the Chemistry Instrumentation Center (ICP-MS, HPLC-MS), RENEW Institute (TEM, IC), and the Materials Characterization Lab (ICP-OES, XRD, lyophilizer).

Shimadzu GC-2014 greenhouse gas chromatograph
This special-purpose gas chromatograph offers simultaneous determination of all major greenhouse gases in environmental air samples: carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide. It is also capable of simultaneous determination of nitrogen, oxygen, carbon monoxide and sulfur hexafluoride.

Combustion analyzer for determination of total organic carbon, total carbon, and total nitrogen (via chemiluminescence) in environmental samples. We can process aqueous samples on the instrument, as well as micronized solid samples (e.g. soils) in aqueous suspension. The instrument has an autosampler and a custom interface to the Picarro for simultaneous analysis of isotopes of carbon.

Picarro i-2131 cavity ringdown spectrometer for isotopes of CO2
This spectrometer measures carbon isotopes of CO2 gas as well as water vapor and methane concentrations. A custom-built peripheral may be interfaced with the device to measure carbon isotopes of methane, and it can be interfaced to the TOC-L for analysis of isotopes of organic carbon.

Plant growth chambers
We have a very nice walk-in growth chamber for growing plants under controlled conditions with controllable temperature, carbon dioxide, humidity and photosynthetically active radiation (from 0 to daylight.) 4 square meter growing area with a maximum canopy height of 1.5 m. We also have a smaller reach-in growth chamber for smaller plants.

We have a Coy Labs oxygen-free glove box for experiments involving oxygen-sensitive microbes and minerals. An airlock with automatic vacuum purging facilitates moving materials in and out of the chamber.

Built by UB undergraduate Jared Aliannell (CEE '24) this robot can perform automated sample preparation in a 600 x 400 mm workspace, with liquid and gas handling capabilities. It is fully programmable by G-CODE and capable of serving as an autosampler for most instruments in the lab. The robot is a modified 3D printer from OpenBuilds. I wrote software for advanced sequencing of the robot that you can find here.
