Data Visualization for Long-Term Ecological Records
Check out the project: http://hbwater.org
Hubbard Brook is one of the best-studied forests in the world, and there is a wealth of publicly-available data (> 1 million records) from the 60+ years of the Hubbard Brook Ecosystem Study. The quantity and format of these data can be overwhelming, however. Working with a team of four undergraduate data scientists from Duke, we created data visualization and analysis platform that will allow educators and researchers to quickly access these data and perform exploratory data analysis. In this platform, we created two modules: an educational "Data Stories" module that will retell some of the classic stories of ecosystem ecology learned at Hubbard Brook, and a"Data Explorer" module aimed at researchers that will allow rapid and seamless incorporation of ongoing datastreams into the extant datasets.
Update: I'm happy to say that other data scientists at Duke have taken over the mantle of this project and continue to improve it! Check it out!
